Age Spots and Hyperpigmentation: Why do they develop? – Skin Management System by Dr. Strauss

Melanin, the pigment which gives skin colour, is produced by melanocytes that are present in the deepest layer of the epidermis. Hyperpigmentation occurs where there is an excess of melanin produced. It has various causes including; sun exposure, inflammation, and skin injury resulting from acne.

But why is it that sometimes this discolouration becomes more apparent with age? As we age the distribution of melanocytes becomes less diffuse, or not as evenly spread out. Where there is a greater number of melanocytes present, more melanin will be produced when exposed to UV radiation, which leads to hyperpigmentation. To prevent this from occurring it is important to properly protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen or hats.

However, there are ways to reduce the appearance of age spots after they have developed. Skin Management System by Dr. Strauss has included various innovative ingredients which target melanin production in the skin.
