The most common types of pigmentation problems are age spots and post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Age spots develop overtime in response to sun exposure. Melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing pigment in the skin, become less evenly distributed as we age. After sun exposure, melanocytes will be activated to produce pigment. Because the distribution of melanocytes is no longer even, those areas that contain a greater number of them will appear darker. Those areas will visually appear as age spots.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation most commonly occurs due to acne. This pigmentation is a normal part of the skin healing process after injury. In the same way you would develop scars from any scrape or burn, once acne begins to heal, an excess of melanin is often produced. These can develop from even minor pimples, and can take as long as 24 months to fade away without treatment.
