How to Improve the Collagen Network in the Skin – Skin Management System by Dr. Strauss

For those who are not as familiar with some of the concepts discussed in the other blogs, I am going to quickly summarize a few things.

Collagen in our skin is responsible for giving it a firm, full looking texture. A dense collagen network is found in the dermis, but as we age fibroblasts become less active and therefore cannot produce enough collagen to keep our skin looking full and firm. Additionally, enzymes that normally breakdown collagen (MMPs) to help rebuild new networks are present, but as we age they can become hyperactive, and contribute to the loss of collagen and skin firmness.

There are some products on the market which claim to contain collagen that helps restore the depleted collagen network in aged skin. However, these formulations are ineffective as collagen is poorly absorbed into the skin. Because of its large molecular size, collagen cannot effectively make it passed the epidermis if applied topically, therefore they will not reach the dermis where they are supposed to be filling the void of lost collagen. Unless an injection is used, which is invasive and may result in side effects, the collagen will not be able to reach the dermis to make its cosmetic effect.

This is why in Skin Management System by Dr. Strauss we have incorporated ingredients which will stimulate the production of collagen in the skin, rather than supplying collagen itself. By targeting either the fibroblasts or the MMPs in the dermis, the production and stability of collagen in the skin can be modified. Ingredients like Neodermyl™, MDI™Complex, Matrixyl™3000, and Metabiotics™Resveratrol help improve the collagen network in the skin indirectly rather than simply supplying collagen to the skin.
